Create the Multi-Regional Input - Ouput (MRIO) Database that will support the EUREAPA tool

DATE: April 2010

Input-output tables display the interconnection between different sectors of production and allow for a tracing of the production and consumption in an economy.

The MRIO database offers a description of the global supply chains of products consumed. The database includes data on specific use of land, energy, and water, and emissions of the industry sectors in each EU country, and allows the total land, carbon and water footprints of consumed products to be quantified. The data source used in the model is the Global Trade, Assistance, and Production project 7 (GTAP7) data. For more information please read the MRIO Technical Report.

In this report we discuss the theory behind MRIO models for applications in footprint calculations (Section 2) and discuss common modeling assumptions (Section 3). MRIO models require a considerable amount of data and we discuss many of the practical data issues that are encountered in MRIO modeling (Section 4). In Section 5 we briefly review important applications of MRIO in environmental policy making. In Section 6 we finally discuss the potential for increased use of MRIO models to indicate the type of policy questions the OPEN:EU model could be used to answer (Section 6).
